Pause. Listen. Deepen.

We are a community of spiritual directors rooted in Christ, based in Charlottesville, and trained in the historic practice of offering attentive prayerful space to notice and respond to God’s presence in your life.

What is spiritual direction?

Spiritual Direction is the practice whereby one person helps another to pay attention to God, and to God’s presence, voice, and sanctifying work in his or her life.

Spiritual Direction IS

A process for growth in your relationship with God, led by the Holy Spirit, in companionship with a Spiritual Director.

Spiritual Direction is NOT

Discipleship (spiritual instruction led by discipler)

Mentoring (development in a skill led by mentor)

Coaching (goal setting and achieving led by coach)

Pastoral Counseling (problem solving guided by pastor)

Spiritual Direction looks like

A quiet, confidential, and safe hour set aside to seek the Lord together and listen for what God is doing in your life.

Sunlight shining through tall trees in a dense forest during sunset.

Consider spiritual direction if:

  • You want to DEEPEN your relationship with God—you have a desire for more, but are unsure what more is.

  • You are in a season of spiritual DOUBT or DISORIENTATION—you have more questions about God than answers or your old spiritual practices no longer work.

  • You are DISCERNING something and need a safe place to notice and observe.

A dirt path with yellow flowering bushes on the left side, blurred trees and mountains in the background on a sunny day.

Ready to take the next step?

Sit down with our list of directors, these questions, and a cup of tea or coffee, and see what God brings up:

  • What brings you to spiritual direction at this time?

  • Are there any ways you are noticing God’s activity in your life?

  • What are some ways you experience God in prayer?

  • What do you hope to receive, learn, experience in spiritual direction?

  • Are there particular questions or issues in your spiritual life or relationships that you want to address?

  • Are you facing vocational or circumstantial life change?

Spiritual direction conversations include all the "stuff" of ordinary life—work, relationships, circumstances, health, the life of worship and prayer and service, joys and sorrows, boredoms and adventures. In an atmosphere of prayerful listening, a spiritual director helps you seek to notice God's presence, work, and invitations in the midst of your everyday.
